Ebook About From the author of Hitler: Ascent, 1889-1939—a riveting account of the dictator's final years, when he got the war he wanted but his leadership led to catastrophe for his nation, the world, and himself. In the summer of 1939 Hitler was at the zenith of his power. The Nazis had consolidated political control in Germany and a series of foreign-policy coups had restored Germany to the status of a major world power. He now embarked on realizing his lifelong ambition: to provide the German people with the resources they needed to flourish and to exterminate those who stood in the way. Yet despite a series of stunning initial triumphs, Hitler's decision to invade the Soviet Union in 1941 turned the tide for good. Now, Volker Ullrich offers fascinating new insight into Hitler's character and personality, vividly portraying the insecurity, obsession with minutiae, and narcissistic penchant for gambling that led Hitler to overrule his subordinates and then blame them for his failures; and, ultimately, when he realized the war was not winnable, to embark on the annihilation of Germany itself in order to punish the people who he believed had failed to hand him victory. This is a masterful account of a spectacular downfall, and an essential addition to our understanding of Hitler and the Second World War.Book Hitler: Downfall: 1939-1945 Review :
In 2016 I read Ascent the story of Hitler's rise to power from his Austrian birth to his cruel rule as the German Chancellor and Fuhrer of the Third Reich. The story was told with skill and literary excellence by German journalist and historian Volker Ullrich. Now in 2020 the author has just published his second volume on Hitler: The Descent. The two books are brilliantly translated into English by Jefferson Chase I am a World War II buff, my Dad fought in the Battle of the Bulge and my bookshelves are teeming with great biographies of evil genius Hitler from the likes of Ian Kershaw,. John Toland and many other eminent scholars.. Rarely, however, has the terrible story of Germany's Nazi regime been so interesting to read and learn about as in this volume. We follow the tragic tale from the outbreak of war in September 1939 as the Nazis defeated Poland, and moved on to conquer France and rule the European continent. Hitler made a peace pact with the Soviet Union and the two giant tyrannically ruled nations carved up Poland. with the Soviet Union . In a major mistake Hitler declared war on the Soviet Union in June 1941. He ordered three million troops to invade the Russian nation. Defeats at Stalingrad and Kursk among other major confrontations led to the utter destruction of the German war machine. Other major mistakes were declaring war on the United States and seeking to wage a two front war against powerful foes such as the U.S. Great Britain and the Russian bear . Hitler was a cold, sarcastic and terrible ruler who ordered the murder of at least six million Jews and other conquered people Hitler hated his generals and refused to follow their advice on how to conduct the worst war in human history.. The book is long but well worth the reading! If I was advising someone who knew little about Hitler and Nazi Germany I would suggest Ullrich's magnificent two volume set. I've been looking forward to reading this book for a while. Imagine my disappointment to find that the book had simply been placed in a box for shipping. On its journey it had slipped and slid around inside the box, denting its corners and tearing a part of the dust cover. At $40 for a book, a little bit of wadded padding wouldn't have cost much and would have eliminated the problem entirely. If I wanted to read a worn book, I could get one from the library and not have bought at all!
